Cocoa's allocators are heavily optimized for doing exactly this type of allocation in huge numbers. Creating an object is cheap -- unless you're doing it hundred of thousands of times in a loop. If you're doing it thousands of times or less, you won't notice the impact.

I have managed through nscalendar and datecomponent to construct date from nsstring, by divinding string into components and assigning them to datecomponent...
something like this:

dateParts = [stringDate componentsSeparatedByString:@":"];

The above is giving me NSDate from NSString of the form `YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS` (format specifiers not obayed).

Here aparantly the init of NSDateFormatter will not be available to iPhone OS 4, or am I wrong?
This changes everything in terms of formatting dates and converting to nsstrings and vice versa.

Matt, I wanted to convert NSString of the type (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS) to NSDate with the format (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM) - e.g. without the seconds for iPhone OS.

Now that NSDateFormatter's init method is deprecated in iPhone OS 4, can you give me a hint on how to do that.
I am trying to use some NSCalendar methods but I am getting confused and angry already.
I have tried an example from Documentation using gregorian calendar style with components parsing the string's elements to NSArray and building the components but eventually I am getting this strange 6-7 digit year for the NSdate...
